In sedation dentistry there are several different methods such as inhalation, oral conscious sedation & intravenous (IV). Sedative agents are typically used for minor surgical procedures. e.g. wisdom tooth removal.
Regardless of the method of sedation dentistry there are several advantages to patients, such as:
Sedation dentistry can also be effective for anxious patients.
Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective sedative agent that is mixed with pure oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that can be fit over the patient’s nose. The nitrous oxide gas helps the patient to relax and enjoy their appointment. It is for this reason that this type of sedation dentistry is effective for use in certain surgical procedures or patients that are feeling particularly anxious.
Oral sedation is an excellent choice for those that fear needles. Usually, a dose of medication is administered prior to the appointment and then topped up during the procedure as required. Although this type of sedation dentistry does not cause the patient to fall asleep, it does dull the senses and induce a moderate state of sedation.
IV sedation is administered directly into the bloodstream and takes effect immediately. While some patients report feeling like they slept through their entire procedure, most sedatives actually allow the patient to stay awake during the procedure.
