Healing exposed roots with Gum Grafts

A gum graft (aka gingival graft) is a procedure that aims to cover exposed tooth root with grafted oral tissue.

Exposed roots can cause hypersensitivity and also an unappealing aesthetic. The most common method used in gum grafting is the harvesting of the connective tissue from the roof of your mouth (palate) and stitching it to the gums surrounding the exposed root. The reasons for gum recession includes: aggressive tooth brushing, gum (periodontal) disease caused by bacteria, genetics and the use of tobacco products.

Benefits of gum grafts with AlloDerm® include:

  • Eliminates the need for palatal surgery
  • Reduces patient anxiety
  • Consistent quality
  • Removes limitations related to palatal harvesting

For patients who are uncomfortable with our dentists removing soft tissue from the roof of their mouth in order to complete the gum graft, Holland Cross Dental Centre offers an effective alternative. AlloDerm® Regenerative Tissue Matrix is an acellular dermal matrix that is derived from donated human skin which undergoes a process that ensures its new host (e.g. your gums) will not reject the tissue.
