Oral Appliances for protection & wellness
Oral appliances are devices that are designed to control certain disorders relating to the oral cavity. They are commonly used to treat snoring, teeth grinding, sleep apnea and temporomandibular disorders (TMD), which have to do with the jaw, jaw joints and the muscles related to chewing and moving the jaw. Some appliances restrict tongue movement with the purpose of preventing the tongue from blocking the airway.
At Holland Cross Dental, we offer several different types of oral appliances:
- Snore guards: If snoring is an issue you would like to remedy, you can wear anti-snoring mouth guards to open up your airways and nasal passages.
- Sports guards: These mouth guards aim to protect the patient’s mouth from injuries and grinding during sports, especially more physical activities.
- Grinding/clenching guards: Many patients grind their teeth or clench their jaw (bruxism) during sleep. A mouth guard can prevent pain in the jaw, headaches and the wearing out of teeth.
- Sleep apnea: This is a sleep disorder that refers to the pauses in breathing and instances of shallow breathing during sleep. Sleep apnea mouth devices can advance the lower jaw forward or hold the tongue in place to allow better passage through the airway.
