Dental Pulp and Vision Care

The composition of our teeth is incredible and complex; what seems like an extension of bone or cartilage is actually enamel, which can be stronger and more durable (once your teeth are taken care of properly on a regular basis). In addition to doing what teeth were made to do (shredding apart larger portions of food and chewing), they are also able to help with your vision.

Some exciting new research has led to a pretty incredible discovery: cells in teeth and cells in our retina have something in common. Essentially this means that cells from dental pulp can one day be used to help sufferers of macular degeneration (a vision problem which can result in permanent vision loss) after they have been given the right coaxing from a medical scientist.

What does this mean in the grand scheme of things? The better shape you keep your teeth in, the better off your eyes will be if you are ever in need of an ocular procedure.

Make sure to brush daily (twice is best), floss, rinse and make an appointment with your local Ottawa dental professional if you haven’t in a while.
