Dr. Mark McCullough, DDS, BSc

Dr. Mark McCullough received his DDS from the University of Toronto, and his B.Sc from the University of Western Ontario. His lifelong passion has been dentistry; a goal he set at the young age of 12, and finally realized in 2002. Relocating to Ottawa from Peterborough in 2004, his main focus has become the implementation of new technologies as well as educating dentists nationally and internationally on these technologies.

Why does Mark like being a dentist so much?

“I love working with people, and also working with my hands and doing highly technical things,” he says.

“I’m kind of a construction worker!” he laughs. “It’s like I’m a site planner, engineer, construction worker, and ribbon cutter all in one. I’ve done almost everything in dentistry, and now I specialize in surgical procedures that make a big difference to people’s lives.”

Training and career

Dr. McCullough is highly trained on Integrated Implantology. Using 3D cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and combining it with intraoral scanning, allows Dr. McCullough to produce a 3D model of the patient. Now the dentistry and surgery he performs can be simulated first on a virtual model, resulting in definitive precision within fractions of millimeters. Another technology, CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics), allows him to use CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Computer Assisted Manufacturing) to design a tooth (crown or onlay), so that teeth can be restored in a single appointment, rather than multiple appointments.

With his colleague and close friend of over 30 years, Dr. Winlow, they helped establish a program with CHEO (Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario) where they re-establish the oral health of cancer survivors in need of treatment. Dr. McCullough is an active member of the Ottawa Dental Society Council, established the Ottawa CEREC study club, co-founded Capital Dentistry and the Capital Dentistry study club, and beta tests materials and methods for many major dental companies in digital implant, restorative and sleep dentistry.

An ongoing commitment to excellence

Dr. McCullough has a continued passion for learning, both educating himself and educating other dentists. His more recent qualifications have been in IV sedation, microscope enhanced dentistry, digital dentistry, and integrated implantology. He is also trained to place full zirconia dental implants (Ceraroot) in addition to common titanium dental implants. Dr. McCullough has been teaching at Algonquin College since 2005 and sits on the college’s Dental Advisory Committee. He also lectures both nationally and internationally on dental technology and integrated implantology.
